I’m really liking the Formidable plugin. All the functionality of Contact Form 7 with a much better UI. The Pro version seems really worth it so far, too – enables you to store your answers and a bunch of other stuff (and it can be installed on as many sites as you like, which makes it cheap in the long run). I feel like I’ve finally found a form-maker plugin I can safely hand off to clients!
Formidable is a dream come true! Okay so that may seem a little drastic, but in reality I book most of my magic shows online using a form my brother created for me 7 years ago. Now he is a hot shot programmer for a national airline and he has no time to help his little brothers magic business.
With Formidable Pro I am able to create “booking forms”, “opt in forms”, and even “customer surveys” in minutes with absolutely no programing skills. Formidable works like magic, and it let’s me do what I like to do most. If your looking for a form solution you have come to the right place.
I’ve been using Formidable Pro on a site I manage to gain information and feedback from particular groups. I tried the free version first and quickly saw the benefit of the Pro licence. I’ve been hugely impressed by the timely responses on the Help forum and, as I become more familiar with the building tools, I expect to gain even greater benefit. I especially like the conditional logic options for field entry, so that I can ask for certain information based on a response to a previous question. A suggestion I made about including an option to either skip to the end, or to have a Save and Finish Later button on any page was met with a positive response and the knowledge that this was an included add-on for a future release. While there are lots of survey tools out there, the additional functionality of a form creator and the fact that the data is able to be presented in a range of ways all within WordPress is, for me, a huge attraction. Having had no previous form writing experience whatsoever we decided to purchase Formidable Pro having read lots of positive comments together with Formidables own site promising “Beautiful forms with drag and drop and a few clicks of the mouse” We expected the form creation process to be pretty simple. Sadly though our experience of using Formidable found it far from being easy and simple to use.
The whole concept assumes that the user in familiar with data fields, dynamic values and the like. It does not take into consideration that many newcomers searching for a form creation plugin may know nothing about these fields. We found the user instructions for Formidable to be poor and obviously aimed toward those more experienced in form creation. We found that the few outdated instructional videos that were offered, often relate to previous versions of the program which used an outdated interface which only causes confusion when trying to follow a step by step process. These same videos fail to explain what each fuction does or why it needs to be done neither do they explain how one part of a forms construction may link to another nor describe the reasons behind this.
In fact the whole process of trying to get to grips with the program is a little like learning how to play chess with instructions that assume you already know how to play. This is a shame because we have no doubt that formidable is a powerful program. We did manage to set up a user post form more by trial and error rather than by simple intuitive instructions and the result was indeed impressive. We then decided to try to create a form wherby users could input data onto a list that could be displayed on a wordpress site and sorted into alphabetical order. This however proved to be a much bigger challenge. We searched the knowledge base, the help desk questions to no avail.
We posted our own helpdesk question asking for assistance on a Saturday, but 24 hrs later our request had remained ignored amongst the sea of other posters asking for support, explanations and guides that should have been put in place already.
We have no doubt that embedded somewhere in the user guides there will be examples of how to construct each section of this process but nothing is listed in a user friendly, easy to understand manner.
The templates offered are very few and far between and the ones that are supplied such as the Estate agents template, is set up stricly for the US market and offers no value for international users, unless of course you want to re-write the entire template.
All in all we feel that despite initial high hopes for Formidable, we were sadly very dissapointed.
Whilst the program appears excellent much work still needs to be done toward making it more user friendly and first class tutorials and instructions would be a great place to start.
